The approach of the 2019 OLA-WLA Conference can only mean one thing… It’s OYAN raffle time! All the money raised goes to promote young adult library services in the state of Oregon including providing scholarships for professional development for individuals who serve teens in Oregon libraries.
Tickets are $5 for a single entry or $20 for five entries. Buy your tickets today before they sell out! You do not need to be present to win.
Prizes include some old favorites such as two tickets to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the coveted two night stay at the beautiful Sylvia Beach Hotel. There are some new comers like the party pack at Voicebox Karaoke as well as some truly unique prizes like a handmade silver cuff bracelet from Distaff Jewelry, and an Eleanor and Park gift basket complete with an autographed copy of the book. But one thing remains the same.

I always appreciate a conference session that is both inspiring and actionable; where I can take away concrete ideas to implement as soon as I return to my library. Lori Lieberman’s Stranger Things presentation was just that! She presented all sorts of low-cost and awesome displays, programs, and games that she’s successfully used with her middle school students. Here’s a list (and some photos) of those ideas!

It was Saturday night of the OASL Fall Conference, and Jason Reynolds towered on stage. He regaled us with the story of how he went from an obstinate non-reader to the author powerhouse he is today. The story begins with a much younger Jason, who grew up in a neighborhood that was dangerous and full of perils like gangs, shootings, drugs, and death. Where young men walked on one side of the law or the other, dealing and gang-banging or keeping their heads down, going to school, and staying out of trouble. Jason was able to keep out of trouble, and focus on school, but he was no reader. Why read? Why bother when there were no books about people like him? Who looked like him, talked like him, walked like him, lived like him? Or about people like his friends, family, and the people in his neighborhood? What could books possibly offer?

On Saturday our Mock Printz workshop was held, and the results are in! Our winner was The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge, and our honor books were We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson, The Passion of Dolssa by Julie Berry, and Railhead by Philip Reeve.

There will be an author talk and book signing on Friday, April 21 at 5:00 PM, followed by a session at the OASL Conference on Saturday, April 22. Both events will be held at Salem Public Library. Ticket cost and purchasing information will be coming later in 2016.
